New Pet Exams and Counseling

Getting a new pet is very exciting, but can be a bit overwhelming for some owners. That is why we are here to answer any questions you might have and get you on the right tract. Many breeders allow up to 48 hours for an animal to be examined by a veterinarian and returned if major health issues are discovered. No matter where you get your pet, from a breeder or a friend or the shelter, it is important to have it examined as soon as possible. It is ideal to have the new pet examined before he/she comes into contact with any other animals you might have at home so that the newest addition does not expose the animals you already have to any diseases or parasites. During a new pet exam the veterinarian checks for any possible congenital defects, such as a cleft palate or hernia, and examines the pet to insure that he/she is healthy. As stated before, this is important not only for the new pet, but for the safety of your other animals. In some cases, such as with birds, even after the wellness exam it is important to wait for blood work results before exposing your other birds to the new bird.
