Our Team

Laurie Young

Laurie has been with Elgin Veterinary Hospital since the beginning and she is such a wonderful person to have by my side as my right-hand woman! As with all the employees, she embodies what Elgin Veterinary Hospital is all about – being a family, having love for animals driving her to always put our patients’ health and well-being first. She gives her all at work and then goes home to all of her own animals and cares for them better than you can ever imagine! Having been together for so long, not only is she an amazing employee and friend, but she is my family and I cannot imagine life without her!

Laurie is the welcoming committee of the clinic and most Saturdays she brings one of her furry friends to help! She has the warmest heart; it shows with every phone call she answers and every family member that walks through the door. She’s a wonderful receptionist and the greatest office manager you could ever meet. Her bright smile, sensational and giving personality, and selfless way of always putting our patients first are just a few of the reasons that she makes the work environment and the warm, welcoming experience at Elgin Veterinary Hospital even better!

In her own words Laurie gives us her perspective on being part of the Elgin Veterinary Hospital team: “Working with animals and people, this is my passion, I love them both. Elgin Veterinary Hospital gives me the opportunity to do what I love to do every day. What a blessing it is to be able to come to work every day and do what I love to do – there is never a day where I am not excited to come to work! It is our clients and patients that motivates me to get up and come to work every day. There is nothing better than being greeted by a smiling face, a happy tail wag and sloppy kisses. Who could not love my job?! There is no greater satisfaction that watching a worried client leave with a smile and relief on their face or a sick pet going home happy and healthy after being hospitalized. Elgin Veterinary Hospital is my home away from home. I love my co-workers like family – it is great to really love the people you work with and to be able to have fun together at a job that can be very stressful at times. Being a military wife has afforded me many opportunities for employment in many different fields and for many different companies. I can honestly say that this job makes me happier than any other job I have had in the past.”

Tasha Lovejoy

NikkieShipe-DurrellTasha is the type of person that you just instantly like! We met through a close friend of mine, who she later married, 5 years ago and we were instantly like family. The second I met her I knew that she would be an amazing asset to any business, but now I am lucky enough to have her as part of the Elgin Veterinary Hospital team. Just like all the team members, she embodies what Elgin Veterinary Hospital is all about – working as a team to provide the best care possible to all of our patients in a warm-loving environment. She loves getting to know both the pets and the people that embody our family and has chosen a career with veterinary medicine due to her passion for animals and her love of working with people. She is a loyal, caring, hard-working woman that always puts the needs of our family members above all else. I’m so happy to have her in my life as a stellar employee and true friend; she is actually much more than that to me, she is my family and I am lucky enough to be able to work side-by-side with her every day!

Tasha has always had a huge heart, is wonderful with both animals and people, and is the rare type of person who I have always been able to count on through thick and thin. She has always happily come in to work with me through the years when I have needed someone in a pinch. I may have called her first thing in morning with no notice when I have needed her, but if she was available she would drop everything and be here with her hard-working, cheerful attitude as soon as she could. She always goes the extra mile to be sure that everyone around her is taken care of – her friends, family, and especially our Elgin Veterinary Hospital family. Due to her big heart, she has lots of furry children of her own. She has a Chihuahua named Neitzsche, a Labrador/Pitbull mix named Abby, a Labrador/Chow mix named Coda, a Labrador Mix named Storm; Five cats named Monkey, Titten, Little One, Watts, and Porky; and three turtles named Carlita, Labamba, and Tom! She admits that her house feels like a zoo at times, but they are all rescues and she wouldn’t have it any other way! She also has three beautiful children that make her life complete named Kody, Lexie, and Trey. She is an amazing mother and always says that without them she wouldn’t be the person she is today. In her free time she enjoys traveling, creating container gardens, landscaping, and spending time with her family and friends.

When asked why she loves being a part of the Elgin Veterinary Hospital family she said, “When I first met Dr. Hoppmann over five years ago I could tell instantly that she was a very warm and caring person. Over time we became closer and closer and I learned that there isn’t anything in the world she wouldn’t do for the people she cares about. Being able to work with her and the Elgin Veterinary Hospital team is a dream come true. It is rare to find a work environment and veterinary hospital that is so friendly, welcoming, and caring. It is so obvious that the most important thing is always working together as family to allow us to offer the best care to our clients and patients and I’m excited and proud to be a part of the team.”

Nikkie Shipe-Durrell

Nikki has been a huge part of my life for the past eleven years; a constant part of my veterinary life since we first worked together at my first job in Columbia after practicing in Charleston. She has been in the veterinary field over 20 years and can do it all! We worked very closely together until I decided to return to school to focus even more specifically on exotic animal medicine and leaving her about broke my heart! Though I was in a different state, we kept in touch since we had developed such a close friendship, and I was lucky enough to have her join me again at the job I accepted when I returned to Columbia after my advanced exotics training. One of my happiest moments was being in her wedding as a bridesmaid three years ago, when she married Ty Durrell, who I have known equally as long and knew that they were meant for each other.

She has worked part-time at Elgin Veterinary Hospital, when I have needed her to, since I opened and now I am lucky enough to have her full-time! She lives in Elgin, in the same neighborhood as Laurie, so they have been able to get to know each other during both of their nightly walks, Laurie with her kids and Nikki with her husband and fur babies! Laurie is thrilled to have Nikki as part of the family. Nikki and Lisa also worked together (along with me, before I bought Elgin Veterinary Hospital) and so she is joining a group of familiar faces and people she knows have the best intentions in their heart. In her free time she enjoys traveling, art projects, and spending time with friends and family (especially her niece Brooke). She has three rescue dogs right now (which, trust me, is a small number for her) – Sabato, a four year old male toy poodle and Miss Beans, a fifteen year old female Chihuahua/Pomeranian Mix and Jeffrey, a two year old male small mixed breed dog.

Nikki is happy to be a part of the Elgin Veterinary Hospital family because of the warm, friendly environment that really feels like home. In her words, “I love Dr. Hoppmann because she is genuine and she truly loves the animals above all else. She is also one of the smartest people I know and I am confident she is the best veterinarian because she is the only veterinarian I would want for my pet.” She’s also really enjoyed getting to know Laurie and says that she is “so very nice and friendly and just has a way of making a person feel very welcomed”. She is excited to finally be at home here and on such a great team!
